A beautiful day at Bundoora

Saturday, September 16th, 2006

Neil & I went out to Bundoora for a bit a of tune up for our end of season trip. Nobody else was interested & Trevor had to work. Shane gets a left off because he wife just gave birth, as far as excuses go that one is pretty good. GolfinMelbourne & all it’s members would like to wish Shane & Steph & little Tyson all the best.

The day couldn’t have been any better. Perfect blue skies no wind & around 20 odd degrees. Golf weather at it’s best.

To the game. Today would have to the best I have seen Neil chip ever!!!! He had one chip in & three or four that went with in a bees dick. He’s short game was looking fantastic, not good news for those of us playing up at Tocumwal in a couple of weeks.

My game was a little hit & miss. Thankfully I only three putted 2 or three times which a vast improvement over the last time I played. My drives still don’t like the fairways, the have a tendency to get as far away from the middle as possible.

The course was in fantastic condition. The new fairways at Bundoora have come in quite nicely. There are a few bare patches & a couple of spots were the weeds are coming through but all in all the place is starting to come good. The greens were a little hard to read at times but they run pretty true if you got them on the right line.

The cost of the day was $22 for the 18 holes was isn’t too bad at all. There were quite a few people about today, one thing that was a bit annoying was the when we finished the 9th there was 4 groups starting off the 10th. The groups in front of us were more than happy for us to play through. The whole point of them starting off the 10th pissed me off a bit.

Today was a fantastic day, it’s days like this that make you really enjoy getting out & playing golf. Bring on summer 😉

Keilor golf course game

Thursday, September 7th, 2006

Cary, Dick and myself ( Neil ) went out for a game of golf today at the Keilor Golf Course ( 07/09/2006 ). On our trip out there it  wasn’t looking to good , less then halfway there it started to rain but by the time we got there it had stopped. We desided to play and when got to the 2nd or 3rd Tee it started to rain again, well it was more like a drizzle. This happened on and off during the day, in total it rained for about 6 holes out of the 18 that we played. All in all it was a good game. It’s not a challenging course but it’s an enjoyable one to get out and play for a friendly game, laugh and a geer or more. On the front 9 the greens had just been aerated and a fair bit of sand dumped on them witch helped with your putting, thats what I think anyway, Iwas 2 putting and the odd 1 put instead of 3 and 4 putting. Once again I will have to appoligise for my language, but you should be use to it by now…. The fairways where in good condition, and the greens on the back 9 were in good nick, especially after all the rain we had. All in all we had a good day, enjoyed our round of golf  in good company. I would like to also mention that I was the only one to get 2 pars for the day, but of course I am not one to brag. On that note I look forward to meeting you all on our next round of golf……

Lancefeild on Sunday the 27th of August

Thursday, August 31st, 2006

The day didn’t start well, an early morning start after going out for Stuarts birthday wasn’t a good combination. I felt 100% better after I saw Shane. The day before was the last game of footy for the year & they had a win. He stumbled home at 5ish in the morning & was in a sorry state 😉

Lancefield Golf Course is a small country course so don’t go there expecting Royal Melbourne, but having said that it is a very challenging & enjoyable round of golf. On this day we had 5 of us, Shane, Tod, John, Stuart & myself. I know it’s supposed to be a no-no but we played as one group & with not another soul in site it wasn’t a problem. I was surprised how few people there were, Sunday at most metro courses is just chockers. This is something I hate about playing on the weekends, the waiting. Not so here at Lancefield.

The course it’s self has open fairways but very tricky greens. Most of the holes here are pretty straight forward but what makes it interesting are the greens. Some of them are just tiny. If that wasn’t bad enough a lot of them slope back toward the front. So if you do manage to hit the small target there is still a chance your ball will roll of the green anyway. A comment that was made during our round was that the greens were pretty quick. We played at the end of winter, in summer, especially towards the end, these greens will be like glass. They are tough enough at the moment, in February they will be near impossible.

My favourite hole here is the par 5 15th. It is a most unusual hole. It is shaped similar to a Z on it’s side. You tee off straight then the hole doglegs 90 degrees to the left. Your second shot has out of bounds on your left & a small forest of pines trees on your right. Your third shot (if you get it past the trees) is a dog leg right up the hill to the green. It is a really cool hole.

I’m glad to say that Shane managed to finish the round in one piece, how I’m not sure. We all had a most enjoyable day & it is a great course to come to for a quite round. Lancefield would be perfect place to learn how to play. You don’t have the problem of impatient people rushing the beginner.

I’ve now added the photos from the day. Some of them are a little dark but you can have a look at them here

Review – Keilor Public Golf Course

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

Address: Calder Highway, Keilor North

Number of Holes: 18

Carts available: Yes

19th hole: They sell beer at the Pro shop that you can drink at tables out the front.

First time we player here was in August of 2006. I was impresssed with this course, nice fairways & fantastic greens, Not only are the greens in good condition they are challenging. Some of them slope from back to front, some of them have undulations & some of them are quite small. To me this is one of the best parts of this course. Each green can be different & a lot of the time, depending on where you are in relation to the hole, you have to really think about your putt.

Another thing of note. On the back nine there are back to back par 3’s. I haven’t seen this any where before. On the back nine it begins 4,3,4,3,3. All of the 3’s on the back half are 150 metres or more. On the front both of the 3’s are around 125 metres each.

Keilor is quite a hacker friendly course. Three of us played, none of us are what you would call brilliant golfers, but nobody lost a ball all day. That’s gotta count for something 😉 Keilor is also only a par 69 which means only one par 5 on each 9.

The majority of the holes are pretty straight but this can be counter acted by the wind. The day we played out here was pretty calm but if the wind got up I can imgine this would change the course dramatically. What was an easy par 4 with no wind could turn into a nightmare into a head wind.

None of the holes at Keilor are very long, the longest hole on the course is the par 5 3rd. At 435 metres it is not an overly long hole. Three of the par 4’s are under 300 metres, all of them only just. The 1st is 290 from the back, the 5th is 297 & the 17th is 298. None of them really drivable to your average golfer unless you had a decent tail wind 😉

In conclusion. I’m really glad that Stan recomeded playing here. I really enjoyed playing here & will be going back again soon.

Craigieburn Blows

Sunday, August 13th, 2006

The day looked great but looks can be decieving. The wind was up & so were the scores. We had 5 people up for the round, Trevor was told he had to stay home & Scott went to the footy with his dad. Good call Scott. It doesn’t seem possible but nearly ever hole was into the wind. The fairways & greens were in pretty good nick but trying to judge the distance was a near on impossible. The group we had was Neil, Dick, Ian, Stuart & myself. Stuart had to pull the pin after 9 holes, his arm was giving him a bit of jip. Perosonaly my putting gave me a bit of grief, I had 5 birdies putts & finished with 2 pars & three boogies, not a good avareage. Dick’s driving wasn’t bad for an old bloke & he 1 putted the first 2 holes. Sadly it went down hill from there. Ian’s front nine, according to him, was the worst he has played in a long time. Thankfully he’s back nine was better saving us from his continued cursing, wait that was Neil, & his cursing continued throughout the 18 holes. Personally my front 9 was a mess save 3 holes & the back nince was a mess…. no saving. In the end Ian & I both scored 102 (please no laughing) Neil scored a 110 & Dick stopped counting.

If it wasn’t for the wind I have a feeling we could have carved this course up, but I have never played here when there hasn’t been wind. This is probably the courses defence mechanism 😉 One point of note is 3 groups behind us there was little excitment so to speak. On the 10th tee there was a full on punch up. None of us saw it but we were told. Here is the story as we were told. One group came up & asked the group in front if they could play through & that was it, full on brawl. Ice hockey stuff with shirts being pulled over the head, traping arms & punching the crap out of the bloke. As I said, this is all third person. Play Craigieburn at your own risk ; )

Whittlesea 4 ball

Sunday, July 16th, 2006

The day started off with a few phone calls amongst the four of us to determine if we wanted to play. After Saturdays down pour, we were a little sceptical about playing but we all decided to give it a go. The day couldn’t have been much better. No wind & a pleasant temperature made for perfect golfing conditions.

We had four players for our little four ball comp & the teams were Dick & Stuart & Neil & myself, I knew I was in trouble when I got paired with Neil ; ) The first hole started off with a pair of pars & the second hole set the pattern for the day. Neil & I were on the green with our best ball & Staurt & Dick were over the back. We managered to three putt our way to a 4 were as they manged to sink a great putt for another par, one shot down after 2 holes. We were evenly matched over the next few holes until the 5th & 6th. Somehow the cheats managerd to par the toughest hole on the course & follwo that up with a birdie with another brilliant putt on the 6th which gave them a two shot advatage after my partner boggied the same hole, it was Neils fault not mine. We managed to redeem ourselve on the par 3 8th, or I should say I redeems us ; ) A nice tee shot over the pin & one putt back for a birdie. Stuart & Dick went one over on the hole putting us back to 2 shots down which is where we stayed after the front.

The back nine belonged to Dick & Stuart, some great driving & some fantastic putting saw them put the sword to Neil & myself on the closing holes. On the tought back to back par 5’s Stauart & Dick scored par birdie leaving Neil & myself blamming each other for some pretty average shots ; )

In the end Stuart & Dick were the victories with a score of 81 to 88. We had a great day & it is a fun format to play. The cousre was in pretty good condition considering the drenching we recived on Saturday. The fairways had alittle bit of water on them but not enough to ruin the round. The greens were a real suprise. The was water coming out of the ground under your feet on a few leading you to think they would be slow but tis wasn’t the case. They were still of a nice pace & held true to their lines.

As I said before we had a great day & it is a format that we will be playing again in the future but next time I want a different partner ; )

Our round at Freeway

Thursday, July 6th, 2006

Since my last trip out to Freeway golf course quite a few holes have changes on the front nine. The 1st is now no longer a long par three it is a par 5, just a little bit different ; )

One thing about his course that is anoying is there is no direction from green to tee & then when you find the tee there is no indication of where the fairway goes. You need to find a metal plate in the ground to confirm you are on the right tee. Anyway enough bitching on to the round.

Stan, Neil, Dick & I made it out on Thursday morning. If we believed the weather forecast we may have pulled the pin. In the end it was great day for golf.

The fairways were a little wet under foot, there hasn’t been all that much rain so I wouldn’t want to play here after a week of soild rain (sorry I said no more bitching). The greens felt soft but were still pretty quick. With the mounded greens this can makes things a little tricky. Stan found out the hard way on the 5th green. He run his ball over the edge of the hole & it kept on running off the green, very stiff. That was Stans lot for the day, the amount of putts his missed by the narrowest of margins was a crime. Three putts were the order of the day, very occasionally we had a one putt.

We all started off with horror holes, I managed the only birdie of the day on the next & no body had any joy until the back nine. Neil & Stan both started off the home leg with pars & Dick was happy not to put his ball in the water. Dick was next to get a par on the 13th. After that I was had a nice run of pars on the 15th, 16th & 17th & only just missed my par putt on the last for a perfect run home.

We had a great day out, the weather was kind even if the putting wasn’t. Hopefully Stan is going to arrange a day out at his home course Craigieburn in the near future.

Cheers

Yarrambat on the 27th of May

Saturday, May 27th, 2006

Neil, Stuart, Dick & myself started out at Yarrambat at 10.10 on Saturday morning. It was a beautiful day, low cloud cover but no wind what so ever. The day begun well with everyone making it past the ladies tee, Dick was a bit worried because he had played only once in the last 3 years. The course was in magnificent condition, the fairways were fantastic & the greens were very challenging. There was no such thing as an easy putt today, if you had a three foot putt you just as easy finished four foot past the hole as you did making the putt. We had quite a few three putts on the days round. Neil was the first one to break the par draught & it took until the 6th hole . Stuart quickly followed with the next putt on the same hole. After that I went on a birdie blitz!!! I scored birdies on the last three holes on the front nine, the best birdie streak I’ve every had. As you could imganine you couldn’t get the smile off my face.

Let’s not talk about the back nine, nothing special happened there. After my birdie spree I thought I would let someone else take the spot light but nobody did.

In the end Stuart won with a 91 I followed with a 95 (let’s not talk about the back nine) Neil was next with a 105 & Dick followed with a pair of 56’s

It was a perfect day for golf, no wind & the the greens were receptive to chip shots, they just weren’t receptive to putts ; )

Bright Country Golf Club

Sunday, April 2nd, 2006

I promised I’d write a review of my round at Bright. It’s been a while coming–I’ve been back from holidays for a couple of weeks now–but, without further ado here it is!

It was a crisp, autumn morning and after the heavy rains of the last two days, the morning sun offered a welcomed respite. I had to make the most of it whilst it lasted. “Donna, I’m off the play golf” I yelled as a I loaded my clubs into the back of the car and donned my golf cap.

The Bright Country Golf Club is actually located about halfway between Porapunkah and Bright, which are roughly 10km apart. It was only a short drive to the Club from the caravan park that we were staying at in the centre of Bright.

As I entered the course, I noticed that the ground was still showing signs of being wet from the previous days rain and was worried that it might play a little bit soft. The remnants of a morning dew also remained as I teed off on the front nine. The first hole is a longish Par 4, with a fairway that slopes off to the right, with the large, oval green perched up on a crest to the left.

As I teed of from the second hole, I caught up with a group of three guys playing in front of me. One of them was in the rough and they called me through. I thanked them and let them know that rather than play through I’d join up with them to make a group of four. So, from my second shot on the second hole, I had a couple of local guides–Peter & Mark–and their grandfather Colin showing me the ropes of the Bright course. Playing with someone who knew the course layout helps a lot, although it didn’t show in my final scores.

The first thing you notice about the Bright course is the breathtaking panorama of the Victorian Alps, with Mt Buffalo, Mt Beauty and Mt Hotham imposingly casting their shadow across the valley below. Despite being surrounded by mountainous landscape, the course is not hilly at all, and is in fact, quite flat. The most notable feature of the course–particularly after just playing at Growling Frog–is the absence of sand traps. Yes, you read that right–no bunkers! There are a couple of water hazards on the front nine. There is one on the 7th, which is well left of the tee and one on the 9th which is a ‘pond’ in the middle of the fairway on the approach to the green. You can see this one in my pics.

Both the fairways and greens on the course were in fantastic condition, particularly since summer has just finished. The fairways were dark green and like carpet in the very middles. The aprons were well mowed and the rough was, well rough. The greens were consistent and played true, so you could putt with confidence.

The old guy Colin that I played with was quite obviously suffering from the affects of a stroke or parkinson’s disease (OK, I’m no neurosurgeon) and he struggled to grasp the clubs without uncontrollable shaking. I really admired that old guy. He obviously enjoyed his golf and he was giving it a go despite his difficulties. And he taught me a valuable lesson. When it came to adding up the scores at the end of our nine holes, Peter finished well ahead of the rest of us, Colin and I shot a 57 and Mark finished with a 58 after a disastrous last hole. Yes, you got it. The guy with a ‘disability’ (apologies if this is not ‘P.C.’) shot the same score as me! Just goes to show that golf is not all about how hard or far you hit it, or how you do it.

I only got to play the front 9 holes at Bright having only managed to get out on the course once during our stay in Bright. I would have loved to play the back nine, as I enjoyed the front nine a lot. I’m looking forward to going back some other time. I would also like to play at Mt. Beauty, so this is something to look forward to in the future. Perhaps this would make a good weekend trip for the Golf in Melbourne annual getaway?

Ringwood Golf Course

Friday, March 24th, 2006

Address: 352 Canturbury Road Ringwood 3134
Number of holes: 18
19th Hole: No
Motorised Carts: No

Photo page

Neil & I took a day off work & travelled out to Ringwood. This is a course that Neil used to play a lot when he worked over this side of town but hadn’t been there for a few years.

From the first tee this course looked great. Wide open fairways with good quality fairways. We got paired up with a lovely couple of blokes for the front 9 which is always enjoyable. One of the joys of golf is meeting new people with a commen interest.

On the front nine there are 2 holes of note. The first is the par 3 5th. Visually just a fantastic hole. It is well bunkered around the green with undulating fairways leading up to it. The second is the short par 4 9th. This hole is only about 200 metres & slightly up hill. It has a very narrow fairway but if you drive the ball straight you are in with a very good chance of birdie or even eagle.

One thing you’ll notice about Ringwood is the variety of tee positions available. Most course have a tee box for the mens & sometimes a tee box for the females. Here there are a number of different tee, in some holes up to 4. This course could potential play different ever time you play it depending on the tee position.

I hope to return here in the near future & have another crack at this course
